It's the first single of our new album Creatures. Telling the story of a somewhat lost traveller, this song was started on a summer evening in Palermo and then finished during lockdown in 2020. It wasn't included on Somewhere Between, as I knew it would be a much better fit on Creatures. We recorded it mostly live in just two days last August at The Famous Gold Watch Studios, Berlin. Here's a new video for a new song, 'Balconies'. This was a rather spontaneous effort. I had the idea for the song while riding my brothers mountain bike over the hills of my home area during an exceptionally warm April. I wrote the lyrics in the afternoon and figured out the guitar part in the evening. Katharina filmed me playing the song live a couple of days later.

My Friends is now out as a digital single including a live version of Widow as a b-side. On one of the last sunny autumn days in 2019 we shot this simple music video for the song. It was made with help from The Famous Gold Watch Records collective.
We talked about the album Empathy, influences, the band and the future. The episode is now online and you can have a listen. At the end there's also an acoustic version of Lanugo that we recorded live in my living room.
This is the oldest song on the album. I wrote the lyrics on a train in Austria during a university excursion on alpine folk music in 2012, I think, and then wrote the music on the ukulele I had with me. It's kind of a mix of ideas for several songs that I combined into one. It only occurred to me very late that this song fits in with the concept of Empathy. It's not as based in reality as the other songs, but nonhuman and human animals – in the end we're all just stranded on this fragile planet with no idea why and at some point we're all going to die. It's a bit bleak, I'm sorry.
Musically, I saw this more as an acoustic campfire-like song, but when I started playing it with Nils and Florian, they went full reggae on it. So that's what it is now.

Track 7: Bloodlust

Well I guess when you listen to it, it's kind of obvious how this song came to be. After a terrible, sleepless night, I sat at university, couldn't focus and instead came up with the cello line and the story for this song. I don't remember much of it, to be honest.
This song was in fact the first song recorded for Head in the Air in 2013, but I later decided it would fit much better on this record. I re-recorded the vocals, but the rest of the song has been sitting on my hard drive for six years.

Track 8: La Selva

Remember I was in Colombia with during hurricane Matthew? I wrote a little song about, in case you forgot. After all that happened, Katharina and I hiked through Parque Tayrona. Matthew damaged some of the path and we got lost, but managed to find Playa Brava, where we stayed for the night. Anyway, on our way there I heard a bird sing a very catchy melody. It kept repeating it over and over. As I walked, I imagined how it would sound with some organ chords and electronic beats. Catchy indeed! This song is my memory of that moment, the feeling of the jungle and the bird's song recreated electronically. I didn't record it, unfortunately, so maybe what I remember isn't exactly what the bird sang. I did record some monkeys though and they found their way into the song.

Track 9: La Michi

What would an album about animals be without cat content? This song was one of the first ideas I had, along with Koko & Kanzi and Ulla & Max. But I didn't actually write it until January 2018, two weeks before we played it live in Munich and FĂĽssen.
La Michi was the melodramatic cat of some friends in Berlin. Always graceful and gorgeous looking, always the center of attention. But then a baby dog moved in with her. And she fell out the window. Die she fall or did she jump? Anyway, after that she seemed traumatized and didn't leave the sofa, so her owners began giving her anti-anxiety medication. How very human!
By the way, La Michi can be seen in the music video for Trust.
Track 10: Lanugo

This song came unexpected and fast. I wrote it after I first saw my son on ultrasound. I was deep into making this album about animals at that point, and seeing this being that carries parts of me and will carry them beyond my life put me in a very special state of mind for a couple of days. I saw how we are all part of nature, part of the universe; I saw the circle of life and the beauty of it all. I was so inspired I wrote the lyrics in five minutes and recorded all of the instruments within the next couple of days.
I'm so glad this song came to me and I think it's the perfect ending for this album. I was a bit worried the whole album would be to dark and this song ends it with some peace and beauty.

Fun fact: I wanted to name a song Lanugo ever since I first heard the word at school.Hans Sølohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944866388099034495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108654177313825184.post-53549657033922311062019-05-30T21:24:00.000+02:002019-06-07T22:22:26.344+02:00Empathy: About the songs (I)Track 1: Koko & Kanzi

In 2013 I took part in class about animal cognition at university in Berlin. I learned a lot about the minds of apes. Koko and Kanzi kept coming up not as examples, but as jokes. As fascinating as they are, their leading researchers have become to close to the animals and have fallen to anthropomorphism. Therefore the experiments have lost their scientific value, according to much of the scientific community. So instead of admiring the animals, we laughed at videos of Kanzi cooking noodles and Koko looking indifferently at the cats she apparently loves. I instantly knew I wanted to write a song about them. As funny and sad as their story is, I do find them fascinating. I mean, Koko apparently finds human nipples funny. I seriously think even that tells us something important about animal minds.
The idea for the song stayed with me for some years before I actually wrote it. I watched every video about them, read every paper I could find and scrolled through blogs and comments by former employees. Then I first played it in 2016, during the tour for Head in the Air, if I remember correctly.
Track 2: My Friends

When I listen to other peoples songs, I usually have no idea what they are singing about. My lyrics tend to be more specific, telling stories that people can follow. It has taken me years to see this not as a weakness, but a strength. This song however was an attempt to writing something more stream-of-consciousness-like. It's literally just something I scribbled in my notebook while waiting for a train in Augsburg. I wondered for a while if it's even worth transforming it into music, but when I did, I liked the result. I started playing it in 2017.

Track 3: Ulla & Max

Katharina and I played a house concert at Ulla's chateau in a village near Bordeaux in February 2015. The building wasn't in the best state and Ulla told us, she gets all the energy for renovating it from her dog Max who understands her like no other soul. It was quite an experience - the endless February rain, the majestic old furniture and Ulla's stories about Max. I knew this would be a song.
Katharina and I tried to remember what exactly Ulla said and then put it into rhymes. I wanted the music to be fast and energetic, to reflect Max's personality. It ended up sounding more melancholy, but I hope I managed to grab some of the beauty of their relationship. We started playing the song in October 2015.
This song, along with Koko & Kanzi and La Michi, is what sparked the idea of an album about animals. I decided Bloodlust, which was originally recorded for Head in the Air, would fit better with these songs and I thought it would make a nice EP with four or five songs.

Track 4: All Is Well

This song was a bit of a surprise to me. My friend Caro told me a story that circulated in the vegan scene, about a cow who hides her calf knowing that it would be taken away from the farmer. I liked the story, but didn't see how it would work as a song. Then one night, I walked home from a Sacred Harp singing with the Sacred Harp song All Is Well stuck in my head. Along the way, it turned into the guitar melody, you hear at the beginning of the song. Suddenly I knew how to tell that story. Once home, I found the melody in my mind transformed very well on the guitar (that's not always the case.) and the song was born. This was mid 2017.

You can read the original story, as told by veterinarian Holly Cheever, here: https://www.globalanimal.org/2012/04/13/cow-proves-animals-love-think-and-act/

Track 5: 27 Jahre

After playing a show in Braunschweig, I went to the Natural History Museum the next day. Next to a model of the giant Steller's sea cow, they had an audio installation with describing the hunting of the poor creature. The tone was a perplexing mixture of scientific curiosity and ignorance to the described cruelty. Maybe this could be a song, I thought. At this point I was still thinking I would make an EP. But almost all of the ideas that were a maybe at first, were a yes in the end.
I sent a mail to the museum asking where the text was taken from, and then got the book by Georg Wilhelm Steller from a library. This scientific description from the 18th century is what I sing in the song, with only minimal changes. After the first demo recording, I still wasn't sure if this was a good idea. But the song worked, when I played it live. It's dark and disgusting. My mum skips it, when she listens to the album.
In June you will finally be able to hear it. Empathy, as it is called, will be released on June 14th by The Famous Gold Watch Records and it will be both Grizzly Bird's and the label's debut. A day before that, we will present it live at Barkett in Berlin Schöneberg.

A pre-order is now up at Bandcamp, where you can also listen to a new song, All Is Well: https://grizzlybird.bandcamp.com/album/empathy

Apart from the usual digital stuff, the album will be released on CD - still the most practical physical product for me at this point. It will contain a booklet with incredible animal photography by our bass player Nils, as well as all the lyrics. And with this album, the lyrics are probably more important than ever. The cover picture was taken by Michael Helmer, who usually makes photos of the Allgäu, my home region, that are not quite as dark. I am really happy that he let me use this one, as it fits the album perfectly.

Widow is a song I wrote a very long time ago for my old band Orange Harvest Autumn Pumpkin. I never stopped playing it and over the years it turned into many different versions with different line-ups. So it's nice to have this version with the current line-up recorded.
I added a cover that I recorded last week as a b-side. In Evil Long is a folk song found in The Shenandoah Harmony as an a-capalla version from 1848. I like how the song sounds like a ghost story and thought it would sound nice with more guitar.
Relax, I will continue to make music. But I'm tired of being asked the same questions over and over. "Do you like Star Wars?" "Is the pun intentional?" "Why does it say solo, when there are other people on stage?" But most of all, the name is impossible to google. All you get is Star Wars. And it's impossible to find my videos on Youtube. All you see is Hip Hop by the various other musicians called Hans Solo. And Star Wars, of course. I don't like being influenced in my choice of name by computers and algorithms, but unfortunately in these times, this matters. A lot.

So from now on, I will be making music under the moniker Grizzly Bird. Try a search on Youtube. You will find my videos, finally. The show in DĂĽsseldorf on Tuesday will be the first one as Grizzly Bird.
Dezember zehn Jahre alt.
